The Classic Merzouga Ride

This is the activity most travelers picture when they think of the Sahara, and for good reason. Caravans of dromedary camels, led by Berber or Tuareg guides, set out from the edge of Merzouga village or a nearby camp about 90 minutes before sunset, giving enough time to reach a high dune before the light turns.

The pace is slow and swaying, which suits the terrain — Erg Chebbi's dunes reach up to 150 meters, and the caravan winds between them rather than over the steepest faces. Guides typically stop partway for photos, then continue to a viewpoint dune where you dismount to watch the sunset on foot, the sand cooling fast as the color drains from gold to violet.

Rides run 1-2 hours round trip and usually end either back at the village or at a desert camp, where the trek doubles as the transfer for an overnight stay under canvas. It's a comfortable option for most fitness levels and ages, though camel mounting and dismounting can feel awkward the first time — guides assist throughout.

Good to know: wear closed shoes if you plan to walk on the dune at the viewpoint, bring a scarf for wind-blown sand, and confirm whether the trek is one-way (ending at camp) or a round trip back to your hotel.
