Quad Biking Adventure Across Erg Chebbi
Fast Tracks, Big Dunes
Quad biking is the go-to adrenaline activity in Merzouga, and it works well alongside a calmer camel trek or camp stay since a session can run anywhere from one hour to a half-day. Guides lead small groups out of the village on a mix of firm hamada tracks and softer dune approaches, building up from flat terrain to steeper climbs as riders get comfortable with the machine.
Sunset departures are the most popular slot, timed to reach a viewpoint dune as the light turns — the same golden window used for camel treks, but covered at speed instead. Longer circuits push further into the desert, taking in fossil-strewn flats, small Berber settlements, and quieter dune fields away from the village.
All standard tours include a helmet and a short safety briefing before setting off; automatic quads are typically used for first-timers, with manual or larger-engine machines available on request for experienced riders. Groups are usually kept small and guided at a controlled pace rather than left to ride freely, both for safety and to protect the dune ecosystem.
Good to know: wear closed shoes, sunglasses or goggles, and clothing you don't mind getting dusty; a bandana or scarf over the nose and mouth helps a lot on windier days.
