Sunrise Hot Air Balloon Flight over Marrakech

A Marrakech Morning from the Air

Hotel pickup runs early — typically 4:30 to 5:30 AM depending on the season — for the drive out to the launch fields on the city's rural outskirts, where the crew inflates the balloon as the sky begins to change color. Lift-off is timed to first light.

The flight itself lasts around an hour, drifting over palmeraie groves, dry riverbeds, small Berber villages, and open plains, with the snow-capped High Atlas as a backdrop for most of the ride. Pilots keep the flight low enough to see daily life starting below — farmers heading to fields, herds of goats and camels — while narrating landmarks along the way.

Landing is followed almost everywhere by a Berber-style breakfast set up under a caidal tent: msemen, fresh bread, olives, honey, and mint tea, often with a flight certificate handed out afterward. You're back at your riad or hotel by mid-morning, in time to still make the most of the day in the medina.

Good to know: flights depend on wind conditions and can be postponed with little notice; book early in your trip so there's room to reschedule if needed, and dress in layers for the cold pre-dawn air.
