Morning: The Drive to the Coast
Pickup from your Marrakech riad or hotel is typically between 7:30 and 8:30 AM for the roughly 2.5–3 hour drive west. The route crosses arganier (argan tree) country, and most tours stop en route at a roadside argan oil cooperative to see the traditional extraction process and sample products.
Midday: Essaouira's Medina and Ramparts
On arrival, a guided walk through the medina takes in the Skala de la Ville sea bastion, with its row of antique cannons facing the ocean, before continuing into the souks. Essaouira's medina is smaller and far less intense than Marrakech's, known for woodworkers carving thuya, a fragrant local wood, into boxes, chess sets, and furniture right in front of you.
Midday: The Port
A stop at the working fishing port is a highlight for most visitors — small blue boats returning with the day's catch, gulls overhead, and stalls selling fish straight off the boats. It's one of the most photogenic, least staged scenes in coastal Morocco.
Afternoon: Lunch and Free Time
Lunch is typically fresh grilled sardines, seabream, or calamari at one of the port-side seafood grills, though vegetarian options are available on request. Late Afternoon: Return to Marrakech
